Taiwan Is Building More Homes Than It Needs. So Why Is There a Housing Crisis?

Taiwan is second only to Hong Kong when it comes to residential property prices in Asia. Residential prices have been in overdrive over the past decade, pressuring a society where home ownership is deeply embedded. Average monthly salaries lag far behind property prices. It will take a median-income family 25 years to own a home, far more than most other countries in the world including the UK. We explore the issue in Taiwan and look at the UK’s efforts to tackle its own housing affordability concerns with Chantalle Rietdijk (National Taiwan University) and Paul Watt (London School of Economics).
