Taiwanese Musical Making Its Off-Broadway Debut: Don’t Cry, Dancing Girls
The hit Taiwanese musical Don’t Cry, Dancing Girls (勸世三姊妹) has seen unparalleled success domestically with two sold-out tours. It tells the story of three sisters who return to their childhood home in Huwei, Yunlin in southern Taiwan after their uncle’s death to collect their inheritance. Performed in Taiwanese Taigi and Mandarin, the musical incorporates Taiwanese funeral rituals and folk traditions. It’s now made its way to New York City for a workshop performance Off Broadway. So, what are the challenges of launching such a uniquely Taiwanese production in the U.S. market?
