Originally from Hong Kong, Huang Yung-fu joined the National Revolutionary Army in 1946 to fight the People’s Liberation Army during the Chinese Civil War. Later, he would migrate to Taiwan together with the Kuomintang (KMT) and move into temporary housing in one of the many dedicated military villages across the country. When his home and the homes of his neighbors were threatened to be demolished due to redevelopment, Huang decided to stay and began painting colorful paintings in his home, which eventually spilled out into the rest of the neighborhood, as a form of nonviolent protest using his art to fight for his rights.
