Russia's invasion of Ukraine has shone a spotlight on the struggle between democracies and authoritarian governments worldwide. What American political scientist Francis Fukuyama dubbed "the end of history" — the triumph of liberal democracy — now no longer seems certain. But there are many examples of formerly brutal authoritarian regimes that have gone on to democratize and succeed, including Taiwan's Kuomintang, or KMT. To find out more about the route from authoritarianism to democracy, TaiwanPlus reporter Ed Moon spoke to Joseph Wong, a professor at the University of Toronto and co-author of "From Development to Democracy," which examines why some regimes in Asia have democratized — and others haven't.
