Song dynasty-era artist Li Tang painted this landscape entitled "Wind in Pines Among a Myriad Valleys" using a brushwork technique that later became known as "axe-cut" texture strokes, which was ideal for suggesting the sharp features of rocky landscapes. Li Tang has portrayed the rugged, powerful features of a mountainous scene with a scene in the foreground that represents a more intimate setting. This style later became popular in Southern Song dynasty paintings.
