Nanmen Market is the site of flavor memories for countless old Taipei locals. Because of plans to tear down and renovate the building that is home to the market, the old market has closed and moved to a temporary new location. In 1907, market vendors who had once gathered at the Taipei city wall and outside of the wall’s southern gate were relocated to a single-story brick building by the Japanese government for centralized management. At the time, the market was named Chitose Market for its location in the Japanese-named Chitose Town, but after the KMT government took control of Taiwan, the market was renamed Nanmen Market (Southern Gate Market).
